Vetiver: THE Oil for Mental Health Support

Part of the Poaceae (formerly Gramineae) botanical family, Vetiver is a clumping type of grass with roots that grow straight down into the ground. Often used for erosion control, the grass grows well on hillsides and along water ways such as rivers and ocean inlets. The tubular roots and rootlets have been known to grow several feet into the ground stabilizing the soil and reducing the movement of sediment; they are painstakingly steam distilled for their potent essential oil.

History

Known as the “oil of tranquility” in Ayurvedic Medicine, Vetiver Essential Oil has an intense balsamic, earthy scent with sweet undertones. Since before the middle ages, the people of India have been using the Vetiver roots for perfumery, baskets, and as a flavoring agent (like khus syrup). Vetiver is also a natural coolant and has been used to cool water in clay jugs in warm and tropical areas around the world.

Benefits

Aside from perfumery, Vetiver essential oil is used to support mental and physical health, which includes issues such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), insomnia, anxiety and depression. The calming effect it has on the body allows those who cannot calm their brains enough to accomplish a task, to finally focus or rest long enough to fall into a more restful sleep.

Part of mental health is emotional health, and Vetiver, the “oil of tranquility” comes to the rescue. When feeling flighty, untethered, or scattered, inhaling the warm, earthy notes helps relax the mind to become more grounded.

The warming action of Vetiver encourages positive blood circulation and is believed to aid in skin regeneration, especially in cases of scarring due to acne or minor injuries.
